Small lymphocytic lymphoma, light micrograph. B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia and small lymphocytic lymphoma are the most common mature B-cell neoplasms and are considered to be different manifestations of the same disease. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia affects middle-aged and elderly patients. The mature-appearing neoplastic B-cells are predominantly in blood and bone marrow. In small lymphocytic lymphoma, the neoplastic cells are mainly extramedullary with very few leukemic cells in blood. This low-power photomicrograph shows small lymphocytic lymphoma (purple areas) infiltrating the liver (pink-red areas). | |
