Femur trochanter fractures, illustration. This end of the femur (thigh bone) forms part of the hip joint, and it is the head and neck and trochanter of the femur that typically fracture in injuries to the hip. At left, the fracture is at the base of the femoral neck, known as a basicervical fracture of the femoral neck. At centre and right are two types of fractures to the trochanter, the ridged area just below the femoral neck. These are known as trochanteric fractures. Other types of fractures are to the femoral head (ball-shaped). For illustrations of different types of femoral fractures, see images C046/2997 and C046/2998. | |
