Uluru in spring, with cumulus humilis clouds overhead. Uluru is a large sandstone rock formation, the visible part of a much larger underground rock formation. It rises more than 318 metres above the surrounding plain. An Aboriginal sacred site, it is located in Kata Tjuta National Park. Cumulus clouds typically occur under 2000 metres altitude. They form from water vapour in rising columns of air which condenses as it cools. The humilis variety occurs either as the first stage of the formation of other cumulus types, or when heat transfer (convection) in the atmosphere is weak. Due to its shallow depth, cumulus humilis does not produce any significant weather. Photographed on an early afternoon in October. | |
