Cumulus clouds over Pinnacles Desert, Western Australia, with a rain shower. These are cumulus mediocris (Cu med) clouds. Cumulus clouds often form at cold fronts where the advancing, cool air forces warm air upwards. It typically occurs at under 2000 metres altitude, with the mediocris variety having a moderate vertical extent. In the foreground are weathered limestone pinnacles formed by wind erosion over millions of years. Cores of material harder than the surrounding rocks survive above the ground, while the blast effects of sand carried by the wind rounds off the features. Photographed in mid-afternoon in October. | |
