Horse chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum), or conkers that have fallen in autumn. Fruits of the horse chestnut tree mature into capsules containing between one and three nut-like seeds (the conkers). The capsule epidermis often has spines (prickles) and when mature, the capsule splits into three sections to release the seeds (a white scar on the conker remains where the capsule was attached). Photographed in Dorset, UK, in September. | |
