Mating male tsetse fly marked with fluorescent tracking powder (pink) containing a biocide. This tsetse fly (Glossina palpalis gambiensis) is part of the Burkina Faso strain. This tagging technique is part of the ERC REVOLINC research project (Revolutionizing Insect Control). This project aims to develop the sterile insect technique (SIT),using a sterile insect male not only as a sexual competitor but also as a specific carrier of biocides to the targeted female. The marking powder also contains the growth inhibitor pyriproxyfen, which is designed to impact female fertility. The tsetse fly is a blood-sucking parasitic fly that is found in tropical Africa. Tsetse flies transmits Trypanosoma protozoa, which cause sleeping sickness in humans. Photographed in 2019. | |
