Dust storms on Titan,Cassini images. Titan is Saturn's largest moon, with a thick nitrogen atmosphere and orange haze. The surface is an icy crust, with rugged mountains and lowland areas. The surface temperature averages 94 Kelvin (minus 179 degrees Celsius). It is thought that strong wind gusts lead to powerful methane storms over dune fields on Titan's surface. These images were obtained by the Cassini spacecraft's Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) in flybys in 2009 and 2010. | |
