US Army aerial bombing practice,1921. White phosphorus bomb exploding on a mast top of the ex-USS Alabama (BB-8),a pre-dreadnought battleship decommissioned in 1920. The ship is in use as a target in Chesapeake Bay,USA,with a US Army Martin twin-engine bomber flying overhead. The white phosphorus form of the element is highly flammable in air and toxic. Once it starts burning,it is difficult to extinguish. If it comes into contact with human skin it can cause severe burns that are difficult to treat. Photographed on 23 September 1921. | |
