Artemidorus papyrus. Drawing of animals from the controversial Artemidorus papyrus, dated first century BC by some authorities, and declared a forgery by others. The papyrus consists of a 3 metre-long long piece of papyrus on which five columns of text appear, accompanied by the outline of a map (the only Greek map preserved on papyrus), a series of anatomical sketches, and a collection of animal figures with inscriptions of their names. Initially attributed to Artemidorus of Ephesus, a Greek geographer, recent research has indicated the papyrus may be a 19th century forgery by the Greek Constantine Simonidis. | |
