Bust of the Greek epic poet Homer. In the background is an ancient greek trireme, the foremost warship of the Athenian navy as used in the battle of Salamis in 480BC. This conceptual image is based on a sculpture of Homer in the British Museum. The trireme is a 3D reconstruction based on plans drawn up by British naval architect John Coates, these plans were the basis for the full scale reconstruction of a working replica of a trireme made in 1987. This ship, 'Olympias', is now in the charge of the Greek navy. | |
