Oedema in obesity. Coloured x-ray of the right forearm of an obese 23 year-old female patient (weighing 175 kilograms), who is being assessed for treatment of her obesity. The x-ray examines the patient's forearm, showing the ulna and radius (forearm bones, running top to bottom), as well as the elbow (top) and wrist (bottom) joints. Obesity is known to increase pressure on joints, leading to premature joint erosion and arthritis. Here, there is evidence of soft tissue oedema (fluid accumulation within tissues causing swelling), which in turn, has affected the patient's blood vessels and circulatory system. | |
