Emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) wing and plumage. The emperor is the largest of the penguins, standing around 115 centimetres tall and weighing 30 to 40 kilograms. Like all penguins, its is flightless, with the wings used when swimming in the sea. The plumage consists of insulating feathers to keep the penguin warm, with a layer of air trapped in the plumage to ensure buoyancy. The black colouration (which contrasts with the white front) is an example of countershading, camouflaging them in the sea from their predators. Photographed in October, in Antarctica. | |
