A distinctive and brightly marked caterpillar of the scarlet tiger (Arctia villica) is so named by the scarlet hind wings. The flight period is May to July with a single generation each year. The species is found through Europe into Asia but mainly confined to the west and south west in the UK. Often found in damp habitats, the caterpillars feed on a range of herbaceous plants. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in July. | |
