John Lawson Johnston, Scottish-born businessman, 1897. In about 1863 Johnston (d1900) developed a beef extract, at first known as 'liquid beef' but later named 'Bovril', a named derived of Bos, the Latin for ox, and Vrilya, the life force in The Coming Race, a novel by Bulwer Lytton.
