Aequorea crystal jellyfish with amphipods. Jellyfish are free-swimming aquatic invertebrates that are related to the sea anemones and corals. They use their tentacles to subdue prey such as fish, crustaceans or plankton. The prey is then brought to its mouth at the centre of the underside of the bell. Jellyfish swim by contractions of their bell. Amphipods are small aquatic crustaceans, which form part of the zooplankton. These amphipods are hyperiid amphipods, from the suborder Hyperiidea. Most species of hyperiids are parasites or predators of salps and jellyfish. Photographed in the western Pacific Ocean, in the Sea of Okhotsk. | |
