White-backed vulture sunning itself. Bird sunning behaviour is thought to help the preen oil to spread across the feathers and secondly it assists in driving parasites out from within the plumage. The white-backed vulture (Gyps africanus) is a medium-sized vulture. Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of animals, which it finds by circling high above the ground. It breeds in trees on the savannah of west and east Africa as well as the northern parts of southern africa, laying one egg.
