The underside flattened view of a red-figure drinking cup - kylix, depicting the death of Trojan hero Sarpedon, King of Lycia. Sarpedon was killed by the Greek warrior Patroclus in the Trojan war. The dish shows Sarpedon's body being carried from the field of battle by the twins Hypnos and Thanatos - Sleep and Death. The kylix, a wide shallow vessel, was made in Athens between 510 - 500 BC, and found at the Vulci necropolis at Etruria, Italy. It is attributed to the Nikosthenes Painter, and is now on display at the British Museum. The figure on the left is probably a herald carrying the wand of Hermes, messenger of the gods. | |
