Egyptian hieroglyphics from a pharaoh's tomb. Hieroglyphics is the formal writing system that was used in Ancient Egypt, found carved into the walls of temples and on monuments. These hieroglyphics are from the tomb of Rameses IV. The third pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty of the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt, he was buried in 1149 BC in tomb KV2 in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, Egypt. Some of the cartouches shown here (oval shapes) directly name Rameses IV. | |
