Arctic ozone hole, October 2017. Satellite image of the extent in October 2017 of the ozone hole (blue) over the Arctic (centre). Ozone layer thicknesses are colour coded from blue (lowest) through green to yellow (highest). This image shows the extent of the Arctic ozone hole on 14 October 2017. The ozone layer's thickness over the Arctic fluctuates from season to season and from year to year. The Antarctic has had a constant decline in ozone and its hole is greater than the Arctic hole. The amount of ozone depleting substances have decreased from peak levels in 2000. NASA has been monitoring the status of the ozone layer through satellite observations since the 1970s. Image data obtained by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument on NASA's Aura satellite. | |
