Total phase of the July 27-28, 2018, total Lunar eclipse. This was a rare central eclipse occurring at lunar apogee with totality lasting more than one minute. The Moon is seen here (composited) with a Baobab tree (Andansonia digitata) in Savute National Park, Botswana, Africa. Baobab trees are the oldest living relics of ancient times. Dr. David Livingstone referred to the tree as that giant upturned carrot. One superstitious East African belief is that the lord of the rains lives in the upper branches, where he supports the sky. | |
