Medical visualization showing a sectioned artery within adipose (fat) tissue. Cardiovascular disease is caused by atherosclerosis, also known as hardening of the arteries. When the body is affected by atherosclerosis, lipids (for example, cholesterol), calcium, and other substances build up inside the blood vessel walls and create hard deposits known as plaques. As plaque accumulates, it narrows the interior of the blood vessel and limits the flow of blood to cells and tissues, starving them of oxygen. This is termed ischemia. Plaques can rupture and form blood clots, which could cause heart attack or stroke. | |
