This male Laurel Dace (Chrosomus saylori) is in breeding coloration and has developed tubercles on its head. Tubercles are used in some fish to hold position with females when eggs are being fertilized. In other species, they are used in male-male competitive interactions when breeding. This individual was photographed at the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute. The organization is breeding the species in their facilities and spearheading a conservation initiative. This is a federally listed endangered species. Very few populations remain in streams in Bledsoe and Rhea Counties, Tennessee, USA. | |
