Medical visualization taken from human scanned data showing a man experiencing a stroke. Strokes occur when blood supply to the brain is cut off. This can be caused either by the build-up of plaque in an artery that carries blood to the brain, or when a blood clot becomes lodged in a feeder artery. Strokes are particularly dangerous because, unlike muscle cells and liver cells, brain cells can't store glucose for energy. They must be continually supplied with glucose, and oxygen, by the blood. So when a stroke cuts off a brain cell's supply of blood, the cell has no stored glucose to use for energy and starts to shut down in a matter of minutes. | |
