Aquifers are underground layers of gravel, sand, or otherwise permeable rock through which water can flow. This groundwater supplies natural springs and man-made wells. Global warming and other effects of industry can reduce the water supply to aquifers, which are critically important for irrigation in arid areas. One of the effects of global warming is decreased snowpack in mountainous areas, which limits the supply of runoff. Industrial factors, including pumps used by farms, and water use in cities and towns also reduce water supply in aquifers. Illustration. | |
