Orion's Belt and nebulae, optical image. The three stars forming the slanted line at top are known as Orion's Belt, and form part of the constellation of Orion. From left to right they are: Mintaka (Delta Orionis), Alnilam (Epsilon Orionis) and Alnitak (Zeta Orionis). Orion is a large and prominent constellation that straddles the celestial equator, making it equally visible from the northern and southern hemispheres. Emission nebulae and dark nebulae around Alnitak at upper right include the Horsehead Nebula (B33), IC 434, and the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024). Just below centre is M78, with Barnard's Loop (red) across bottom. Photographed in 2018 from the Cumeada Observatory in the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve, Portugal. | |
