Apollo Launch Escape System wind tunnel test, 1962. Schlieren images of an Apollo Command Module and Launch Escape System (LES) model being tested in the 11-foot wind tunnel at NASA's Ames Research Center. This tested the model at wind speeds of Mach 1.10 at an angle of attack of 10.1 degrees. The LES was designed to pull the crew capsule away from the main rocket in the even of a launch malfunction. There were eleven manned Apollo missions from 1968 to 1972, landing a total of 12 US astronauts on the Moon. Photographed on 25 February 1962. | |
