Astronaut training in volcanic lava tube. European Space Agency (ESA) astronauts training in a lava tube as part of a training course simulating geological fieldwork on a planetary mission to Mars. Lava tube on other planets may contain subsurface water, potential candidates in the search for extraterrestrial microbial life. This lava tube is on the volcanic island of Lanzarote, part of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. This area was the location for one of the elements of the Pangaea training course (started in 2016), designed to simulate missions to places such as the Moon and Mars. Photographed in November 2017. | |
