Meteosat weather satellite preparations. Meteosat first generation weather satellite undergoing final checks at Aerospatiale's satellite centre in Cannes, France. The Meteosat programme was initiated in 1972 by ESA's predecessor, the European Space Research Organisation (ESRO). Three prototypes were launched in 1977, 1981 and 1988. Three more satellites followed in 1989, 1991 and 1993 under the Meteosat Operational Programme (MOP) and Eumetsat, the European Meteorological Satellite organisation. Meteosat 7, the last first generation satellite, was launched in 1997 under the Meteosat Transition Programme (MTP). Meteosat satellites were equipped with a scanning imaging radiometer that returned three visible and infrared full-disc images of the Earth every 30 minutes. | |
