Several fossil Ichthyosaur vertebrae are here seen superimposed on a rocky substrate packed with fossil belemnites. This slab of limestone from Jurassic sediments in South Germany is indicative of a mass-mortality event, like an earthquake triggering a submarine landslide. The abrupt burial of the local fauna and flora by such events secures their excellent fossil preservation. Actual width of sample is 430 mm. | |
