Pierre Amedee Jaubert (1779-1847), French explorer, diplomat, traveller and orientalist. Jaubert was a member of the Egyptian Institute of Sciences and Arts that advised Napoleon Bonaparte during his conquest of Egypt (1798-99). Jaubert also travelled and worked in the Ottoman Empire (from 1802) and Tibet (1818). In later life, he became professor of Persian in the College de France, and director of the Ecole des langues orientales. In 1830, he was elected a member of the Academie des Inscriptions. He was also made a Peer of France (1841). His published works include 'Voyage en Armenie et en Perse' (1821). Artwork published in 1844. | |
