Polarised light micrograph of a tangential section of the mature wood of the Californian giant evergreen redwood. It is the only extant species in the genus Sequoia. Lush groves of Sequoia sempervirens thrive along the Pacific Coast of North America. The oldest trees are at least 2, 200 years old and the tallest living specimen is recorded at 110 m high. Medullary rays are seen running vertically and tracheids run vertically. Magnification: x102 at 10cm wide. | |
