Polarised light micrograph of a radial section of mature wood of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). The vertical lines are sectioned medullary rays which pass nutrients and water laterally. Uniseriate pits are seen on the walls of some of the vertically orientated tracheids. Scots pine is an important tree in the forestry industry with the wood being used for pulp and sawn timber products. Magnification: x68 at 10cm wide. | |
