Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section of mature wood of the European larch (Larix decidua). Trees are normally categorised as either coniferous (cone bearing) or deciduous (shedding their leaves in autumn). Larch falls into both categories and is one of a very few coniferous trees which sheds their leaves. The larger cells to the top of the image represent springwood (earlywood) while the more densely packed cells to the bottom of the image result from autumn (latewood) growth.
