Polarised light micrograph of a radial section of the common or black alder (Alnus glutinosa). This is a European deciduous tree (family Betulaceae) growing to a height of 25m. Tracheids and vessels with circular pits and sclariform perforation plates are seen running vertically and longitudinally sectioned medullary rays are seen running horizontally. Magnification: x102 at 10cm wide.
