Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) experiment before launch. NASA's CAL mission launched to the International Space Station (ISS) on 21 May 2018. It is designed to carry out research into Bose-Einstein condensate (BECs). This quantum mechanical phenomenon is a state of matter that exists at low temperatures close to absolute zero. In this state, the condensate exhibits microscopic quantum properties on a macroscopic scale. CAL consists of two standardized containers. The larger container (the 'quad locker') contains CAL's physics package, using lasers to cool clouds of atoms to ultra-cold temperatures. | |
