Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), temperature contour plot. This quantum mechanical phenomenon is a state of matter that exists at low temperatures close to absolute zero. In this state, the condensate exhibits microscopic quantum properties on a macroscopic scale. The sequence shown here starts at lower left, with temperature decreasing towards right. The formation of the condensate is indicated by the sharp peak (and increasing density) that forms in the temperature contour plot. This BEC formed at a temperature less than 1 Kelvin above absolute zero. This image was published as part of NASA's Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) mission, which launched to the International Space Station (ISS) on 21 May 2018. | |
