Travertine limestone deposits at Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, WY. Limestone dissolved in the hot water emerging from the springs precipitates out as travertine as the water cools. Cyanobacteria and some heat loving algae species growing in these waters are responsible for the orange and yellow coloration. Such heat loving species are called thermophiles. | |
