Illustration of the Taung child skull found in South Africa in 1924. The skull belongs to a Australopithecus africanus child, thought to be 3 at the time of death, and killed by an eagle. It dates from around 2.5 million years ago. This skull was among the first early human fossils to be found in Africa. It provided the first evidence of an early human walking on two legs, as the hole that the spinal cord connects to the brain through was towards the front of the skull. | |
