Sprained ankle of a 55-year-old man. A sprain is a tearing or stretching of the ligaments that hold together the bone ends in a joint. The fibrous capsule that encloses the joint may also be damaged. The most common site for a sprain is the ankle. An X-ray of the ankle will determine if it is broken. Treatment of the sprain includes reducing the swelling with ice packs, resting the joint and the use of painkilling drugs. This injury occurred while playing football. | |
