Angioedema of the tongue of a 90-year-old woman as a reaction to taking the drug spironolactone. This drug is typically used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) as well as fluid build-up due to various heart, liver and kidney conditions. The swelling is a response of the body's immune system to the drug. If the swelling is excessive, it can obstruct breathing. Treatment is to alleviate the symptoms and if possible to avoid the underlying cause. | |
