Diabetic ulcer and infection on the foot of a 71-year-old man with poorly controlled diabetes. He has non-insulin-dependent (type two) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Ulcers form in diabetes because the disorder can lead to the breakdown of small blood vessels. This impairs the flow of blood to the affected areas, leading to infection and pus formation. Treatment is aimed at the underlying cause, in this case blood sugar levels need to be carefully monitored. Antibiotic drugs and regular cleaning and dressing of the ulcer will help the healing process. | |
