Aircraft contrail in altocumulus clouds. Aircraft contrails (condensation trails) are artificial clouds formed from frozen water droplets from the exhaust of the engines of an aircraft. They are formed when the aircraft is flying at an altitude of over 5000 metres and when the upper atmosphere is nearly saturated with moisture. This contrail has formed in a thin layer of altocumulus cloud. Altocumulus clouds occur at middle altitudes (2400-6000 metres). They sometimes form great sheets that cover the sky, as has happened here. The clouds can form in a number of ways and are usually associated with fair weather. | |
