Rubber industry in the Amazon, 19th century illustration. This harvesting of a rubber-producing tree is taking place in Venezuela in the Amazon. Natural rubber is harvested as latex from the cut trunks of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis). Other plants also produce latex. In this case, the latex is being obtained from the tree Brosimum galactodendron (also known as Galactodendron utile and Brosimum utile). The latex is similar in taste to ordinary milk, giving rise to this tree's common names: cow tree or milk tree. Artwork published in 1878. | |
