| Collecting carbon dioxide gas by downward delivery. Copper carbonate (CuCO3) is added to an Erlenmeyer flask with 0.4 M sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Carbon dioxide gas (CO3) is produced in the reaction: CuCO3 + H2SO4 -> CuSO4 + H2O + CO2. Carbon dioxide gas is heavier (more dense) than air. Therefore it sinks down into a test tube and displaces the less dense air upwards. This method of gas collection is called downward delivery. | |
