Saddleworth Moor fire. Satellite image of a plume of smoke rising from a large fire on Saddleworth Moor, Greater Manchester, UK, on 27th June 2018. The fire is believed to have been started deliberately on the 24th June. At its peak the fire covered 18 square kilometres. It was declared a major incident on the 26th June. The Army were called in to help tackle the fire, which was still burning on the 6th July. June 2018 was the hottest in the UK since 1995 and the driest for over 10 years, and followed an unusually hot and dry May. The town of Stalybridge is to the left of the fire.
