This is a larval Left Eye Flounder (Bothus sp.) that was collected in a trawl between 200 meters depth and the surface in the Gulf of Mexico. Larval fishes are common in midwater trawls. Many species have larval forms that live in the water column as they develop, feeding on the rich plankton community closer to the surface. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project. | |
