Oxidation of alcohols. Oxidation of a primary and secondary alcohols by potassium dichromate (VI) (K2Cr2O7). In the process chromium is reduced from +6 oxidation state to +3 oxidation state. This is physically observed as a colour change from orange to green to blue. Here 0.4 mL of 0.23M solution of potassium dichromate acidified with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) was added to three test tubes each containing 6.5 mL of, left to right: methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (C2H5OH) and isopropanol (C3H7OH). Methanol and ethanol are primary alcohols and isopropanol is a secondary alcohol. | |
