Copper oxidation. A strip of copper metal (Cu) is strongly heated in a flame of a propane Bunsen burner. Copper becomes red-hot and reacts with oxygen (O2) in the air. A layer of black copper (II) oxide (CuO) is formed on the surface. The reaction is: Cu + O2 -> CuO. This is an example of a synthesis reaction. | |
