The Legless Searsid, Platytroctes apus, has been found to depths exceeding 5, 000 meters. The fish has an organ on its side (a shoulder luminous organ) that can expel a glowing fluid. This is an escape mechanism and is similar to various deep sea shrimp. The expelled cloud of bioluminescent material glows brightly for several seconds. One hypothesis suggests that potential predators would be distracted while the fish swims away. This individual was trawled up in the Gulf of Mexico, 2015. | |
