This giant ostracod, Gigantocypris cf dracontovalis, is a deep water seed shrimp. This one was the size of a green pea. The eyes of this crustacean can detect the bioluminescence from their prey items which are believed to include copepods and other small invertebrates. These crustaceans store their eggs internally, in a brood pouch. The eggs develop there until they hatch and juveniles are released into the water column. This individual is brooding purple eggs inside its carapace; it was trawled to the surface in the Gulf of Mexico, 2015. | |
